SUMMARY:Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy
DESCRIPTION:I am very excited to be offering an in-person Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) class. This is the classic\, evidence-based 8-week program. I am an Arizona licensed psychotherapist qualified to teach mindfulness classes through one of the major mindfulness training centers in the country\, the University of California at San Diego Center for Mindfulness. The class will run on Tuesdays\, June 17th– August 5th\, 6 pm-8 pm. Cost is $395. Insurance not accepted.  Payment via Paypal\, Venmo\, Zelle\, cash or check. Space is limited to 12 people. A 25% discount for any therapists who wisht to enroll. \nThis class is appropriate for: \n***Individuals who do not currently qualify as clinically depressed but have suffered from multiple depressive episodes \n***Individuals who are currently undergoing therapy for depression and wish to learn skills that have proven to be useful in preventing relapses \n***Individuals who have not achieved satisfactory results with other treatments \nThere is a required pre-class interview by Zoom. \nMBCT was developed by psychologists Zindel Segal\, Mark Williams\, and John Teasdale. It builds on Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) program\, which emphasizes mindfulness meditation to manage stress. The core idea behind MBCT is to teach individuals a new way of relating to their thoughts\, feelings\, and bodily sensations. The approach helps break the cycle of automatic\, negative thought patternsthat often contribute to depression and anxiety.

SUMMARY:Somatic Dance Reboot: Staying Real and Well as we Address Suffering
DESCRIPTION:Join me for a two-afternoon\, urban “retreat” to practice engaging with your body and the world in ways that often get overlooked or shut down in everyday life. All bodies & abilities are welcome! \nExpressive movement creates an invitation for emotion to find a channel without overwhelming us. This workshop will weave the power of dance movement therapy with mindfulness and loving kindness practices from Buddhist traditions. Expressive movement and other art-making\, particularly in a group context\, help us process our experiences as we address suffering — both in our own minds and in the world. \nTucson: Saturday\, Oct 18th 1:00 p.m – 5:00 p.m. & Sunday\, Oct 19th\, 1:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. \n* Generosity Rate: $200 – Choose this rate if you’d like to support others’ participation. You’re comfortable. \n* Standard Rate: $140 – Choose this rate if you’re sustaining yourself pretty well. \n* Supported Rate: $80 – Choose this rate\, offered with trust\, if it helps you participate. You’re struggling. \n*** Whatever our altruistic\, spiritual\, or professional path\, today’s world presents particular challenges to staying both engaged and well in our aim to reduce suffering. Our brains and bodies — with virtually the same “hardware” as we had when we were hunting\, gathering\, and living in small tribes — are not built to respond to constant\, often graphic exposure to extreme suffering\, often in distant places. What can we do? *** \nFortunately\, we can learn to work with our minds and befriend our feeling\, receptive and expressive bodies in ways that keep us healthy and responsive … or\, response-able. Expressive movement creates a channel for emotion\, so we can sequence it (versus “stuff it” or “numb it”). It doesn’t have to overwhelm us. Through somatic movement\, we can reconnect with aliveness\, energized states\, and a full range of emotions. \nThis urban retreat will weave mindfulness with movement and art to help us cultivate integration and resilience. Together\, we’ll explore the connection between embodied movement\, emotional wellness\, and the possibility of spiritual development. \nPlease register at https://www.tucsonsomaticpsychotherapy.com/event/dancing-the-dharma-staying-real-healthy-as-we-engage-with-suffering/ with both a brief description of your interest and a deposit of $80. I look forward to moving with you!

SUMMARY:Yes\, And! Using Improvisational Comedy and Expressive Arts for Healing
DESCRIPTION:How does improvisational comedy help with the healing process? Improv exercises and games connect with core therapeutic principles\, such as unconditional positive regard\, mindfulness\, and acceptance. They also build community and the capacity for social engagement\, which can be important to recovery in group therapy and a residential treatment setting. \nAt Sierra Tucson\, Dr. Danvers has been leading an “Improv for Healing” class among trauma patients for over two years. This talk presents science and theory behind the use of improv for healing\, and connects it with other artistic and expressive modalities. Modalities such as expressive writing\, art therapy\, and psychodrama share an emphasis on embodiment and sensory engagement\, symbolic expression\, and making meaning. We will discuss how these principles helps with healing\, and provide several easy-to-implement improv exercises for use in a therapeutic context. \n  \nLearning Objectives \n\nLearn about evidence for the therapeutic properties of improv and related artistic modalities.\nUnderstand the way tenets of improvisational performance match therapeutic principles.\nIdentify trauma-informed principles for implementing expressive arts in therapy.\n\n  \nPresenter Bio: \nAlexander Danvers\, Ph.D.\, is a psychologist with expertise in mobile sensing\, machine learning\, and psychophysiology. At Sierra Tucson\, Dr. Danvers oversees the Measurement-Based Care and Applied Neuroscience programs. His work on Measurement-Based Care involves providing customized reports on patient functioning to residents and treatment providers at Sierra Tucson\, evaluating outcomes across Sierra Tucson’s various programs\, and developing algorithms for predicting key treatment outcomes. Dr. Danvers has been performing improvisational comedy for over 15 years\, and has been teaching an “Improv for Healing” class at Sierra Tucson for over two years. He is also passionate about science communication\, and has maintained an active blog on new psychology research at Psychology Today since 2018.
