FAQs: Psychiatrists & Medication Management
How do I find a psychiatrist or psychiatric prescriber on Sana Network? You can find a medical professional specializing in mental health by selecting “Psychiatry” or “Medication Management” from the provider type menu. Enter your city, zip code, or a specific provider’s name to begin. Detailed profiles on Sana Network outline each professional’s clinical approach, areas of expertise (such as ADHD, mood disorders, or geriatric psychiatry), fees, and accepted insurance. Our directory includes both Psychiatrists (MD/DO) and Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNP).
What is the difference between a psychiatrist and a psychologist? While both treat mental health conditions, their training and methods differ:
Psychiatrists: Are medical doctors (MD or DO) who specialize in the biological and chemical aspects of mental health. They are licensed to prescribe medication, order lab tests, and monitor how mental health treatments interact with physical health conditions. Their sessions typically focus on “Medication Management.”
Psychologists (Psy.D. or Ph.D.): Focus on the behavioral, emotional, and cognitive aspects of mental health. While they do not prescribe medication, they are experts in psychotherapy and specialized psychological testing. Many individuals on Sana Network choose to see both a psychiatrist for medication and a psychologist or counselor for ongoing therapy.
What is a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP)? A Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) is an advanced practice registered nurse who has completed a Master’s or Doctoral degree in psychiatric nursing. They are board-certified to assess, diagnose, and treat mental health conditions, including prescribing medication. In many states, PMHNPs have full practice authority to work independently, while in others, they work in collaboration with a physician. PMHNPs often have high availability for new patients and are a vital part of the Sana Network care community.
Can a psychiatrist or a PMHNP prescribe medication? Yes. Both psychiatrists and PMHNPs are authorized to prescribe psychiatric medications. They will conduct a clinical evaluation to determine if medication is appropriate for your symptoms and will provide ongoing monitoring to ensure the treatment is effective and safe.
Do psychiatrists or PMHNPs offer traditional therapy? While both are trained in therapeutic modalities, most “Medication Management” appointments are shorter (typically 15 to 30 minutes) and focus on the physiological response to treatment. However, some prescribers on Sana Network do offer “Medication + Therapy” combined sessions. If a prescriber does not offer traditional talk therapy, they often collaborate closely with therapists and counselors within the Sana Network to ensure you receive holistic care.
How do I know if I need a prescriber or a therapist? If you are experiencing symptoms that significantly interfere with your daily functioning, such as severe sleep disturbances, intense mood swings, or debilitating anxiety, a consultation with a psychiatrist or PMHNP can help determine if medication might be a beneficial tool. If you are looking to process life transitions, trauma, or relationship patterns through dialogue and behavioral strategies, a therapist or psychologist is often the best starting point. Many people find the most success by combining both approaches.
Do I need a referral to see a psychiatric provider? In many cases, you do not need a formal referral to book an appointment through Sana Network. However, some insurance plans (specifically HMOs) require a referral from your Primary Care Provider (PCP) for the visit to be covered. We recommend checking with your insurance carrier or consulting your PCP, as they can often provide helpful medical history to your new psychiatric provider.
Are all psychiatric providers on Sana Network licensed? Yes. Sana Network is committed to safety and professional integrity. Every psychiatrist, nurse practitioner, and physician assistant listed in our directory holds a valid license to practice in their respective state. However, please verify because there are providers listed who are in training and are under the supervision of a licensed clinician. Often times, providers in training offer lower or reduced fees for the same service a licensed clinician provides.
